Dental X-ray

An OPG is a non-invasive medical test that helps to diagnose and treat medical conditions. It can also confirm the number, position and growth of your teeth, including those that haven't yet surfaced.

How should I prepare for an OPG?

There is no preparation for an OPG. A radiographer will prepare you for your examination and will ask you to remove any jewellery from the area being imaged, eyeglasses, hairpins and any metal objects that may interfere with the X-ray images.

If there is any possibility that you are pregnant, you should inform your dentist or oral surgeon.

There is no need to book an appointment for this procedure, but please bring your referral and previous films with you.

On the day of your appointment

Radiology Victoria's friendly staff will greet you on arrival and take your details. A radiographer will collect you from reception and take you to the OPG room, where you will be asked to remove your jewellery, eyeglasses and hair accessories. The radiographer will explain the procedure before positioning you under the OPG machine. Your chin will be carefully placed in a side rest and your head secured before a bite blocker is placed into your mouth to ensure teeth alignment.

You must remain still while a rotating arm travels in a semicircle around your head. This usually takes between 12 and 20 seconds.

How long will a Dental X-ray (OPG) take?

An OPG is painless, simple and very brief. It will usually take 15 minutes or less.
