Injections

During injections, radiologists rely on  the image guidance of CT or ultrasound to safely and accurately administer pain relief medication.

How do I prepare for an injection?

There is no specific preparation for a radiology injection at Radiology Victoria, however, you must schedule an appointment for your procedure and advise our reception staff if you are taking blood thinners or have an allergy to any medications.

Please bring any previous X-ray, ultrasound, CT or MRI scans requested as part of your pain medical history.

On the day of your appointment

Radiology Victoria's staff will greet you on arrival and take your referral form. A radiographer will collect you from reception and ask you to change into a gown if required. Depending on the area of the body being injected, you will be taken to the CT or ultrasound room.

A team comprising of a radiologist, radiographer and nurse will explain what will happen during your procedure and answer any questions.

A joint injection is most commonly performed on hips, shoulders or knees, however, other body joints may also be injected. Ultrasound is typically used for joint injections, but the exact technique will vary according to the radiologist performing the injection and the area of interest.

Back or spinal injections target non-operative spinal pain and are performed using CT imaging.

Our nursing staff will monitor you after your procedure. You will not be permitted to drive after some injections and you will need to arrange for someone to take you home.

How long will it take?

Examination times vary and will be discussed when you schedule your appointment.

Results

The radiologist will produce a report, sent directly to your GP or specialist. Please contact your referring doctor to discuss your results. You will be given a Pain Diary after your injection to allow an accurate assessment of your pain relief from the injection. Please return this to your referring GP or specialist to discuss the results.
